Zero Carbon Charge has opened the first two solar-powered, off-grid EV charging stations on the N3 corridor between Johannesburg and Durban. Funded by a R100m investment from the Development Bank of Southern Africa, these sites use microgrids and battery storage to provide charging independent of the national power grid. Each station features DC fast chargers and AC chargers capable of supporting eight vehicles at once. The project aims to expand to 120 sites nationwide, starting with the N1 corridor, to support the growth of electric passenger and freight transport in South Africa.

Off-grid is the only way to scale this quickly given the state of the national grid. I am curious about the battery capacity at these sites. If they have eight cars hitting DC fast chargers at once, they will drain a small buffer quickly. How are they managing the peak load without a grid fallback?

Maintenance is where this gets tricky. Solar panels and batteries in dusty, high-traffic roadside environments need constant cleaning and cooling to stay efficient. I hope the R100m includes a long-term O&M budget or these things will degrade fast.
