Yukon University Polaris Project Gets First Zero Carbon Building Design Certification in Canada's Territories
canadianarchitect.comYukon University's Polaris science building in Whitehorse is the first in Canada's territories to receive the Canada Green Building Council's Zero Carbon Building Design certification. Designed by Stantec, the 2,300 square metre project combines mass timber, a Larsen truss wall system, and heat pumps that recover waste heat from the campus boiler plant. The design targets a 60.9% reduction in site energy use intensity and an embodied carbon intensity nearly 20% below the ZCB-Design v3 threshold. The project includes wet and dry labs, classrooms, and a ceremony room developed with First Nations partners. Stantec completed a life cycle carbon analysis covering material production, transportation, replacement, and end-of-life over 60 years. The design is expected to save about $55,000 CAD per year in energy costs and cut operational emissions by 14,100 kilograms of CO2 annually.
