Yara opens Europe's largest industrial carbon capture plant in the Netherlands, capturing 800k tonnes of CO2 annually for storage under the North Sea

Yara has officially inaugurated its carbon capture facility at the Sluiskil ammonia plant in the Netherlands, marking it as Europe's largest industrial carbon capture installation. The facility will capture up to 800,000 tonnes of CO2 per year from the ammonia production process, where a nearly pure CO2 stream makes capture cost-effective at around $15 to $25 per tonne, according to the IEA. The CO2 is liquefied and shipped across the North Sea to the Northern Lights project in Norway, where it is injected 2,600 meters below the seabed for permanent storage. Over 15 years, this will keep 12 million tonnes of CO2 out of the atmosphere and set a precedent for cross-border industrial carbon transport and storage.
