This approach produces a liquid fuel that can be stored long term and moved through existing infrastructure, unlike conventional solar systems that generate electricity. The device combines a specialized catalyst developed in 2019 with a redesigned photoelectrode that improves charge separation and electron transfer. Researchers say it is one of the most efficient silicon-based photoelectrocatalytic methanol conversion systems reported so far. The work was done through the federally funded CHASE program and involved multiple universities. Methanol is already used as an industrial chemical and alternative fuel for shipping. The technology could eventually support industrial carbon recycling and renewable fuel production, though significant hurdles remain before commercial deployment. The team continues to work on improving efficiency and durability.
