Xiaomi has entered the high-performance EV market with the YU7 GT, which recently broke the Nurburgring lap record for production SUVs. The electric vehicle completed the circuit in 7:22.755, beating the previous record held by the Audi RS Q8 Performance by 14 seconds. The YU7 GT features a 101.7 kWh CATL battery and a dual-motor AWD system delivering 990 hp. With 800V architecture, the SUV supports rapid charging from 10% to 80% in 12 minutes and reaches a top speed of 300 km/h.

Fast lap times are great for marketing, but I am looking at that 800V architecture. If these high-power chargers become standard for luxury SUVs, we are going to see massive localized spikes in demand. That is where the policy gap is. We have subsidies for the cars, but very little for the distribution upgrades needed to handle 800V fast charging at scale. The hardware is outpacing the grid regulation.

The weight is the issue. 2,460 kg is a lot of mass to move, regardless of the horsepower. I wonder what the actual tire wear and maintenance costs look like for a vehicle this heavy pushing those speeds. The payback on that performance is probably negligible for 99 percent of owners.
