Xiaomi Auto has launched Titan Alloy 2.0, a 100% recycled aluminum alloy for structural car parts like rear floor assemblies. The material cuts manufacturing carbon emissions by 93% compared to virgin aluminum, verified by the IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute. Each vehicle using this alloy saves about 800 kg of CO2, and at a planned annual production of 550,000 vehicles, that adds up to roughly 450,000 tons of CO2 avoided per year. The move is partly a response to the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, which taxes imports based on lifecycle emissions. By lowering the carbon footprint of each car, Xiaomi improves its competitive position in European markets. The alloy has been registered in the international EPD system and certified by an independent auditor, giving it credibility for carbon accounting purposes.

IVL verified the carbon number which is good. But the 93% reduction is against primary aluminum. If you compare to typical secondary aluminum the gap is smaller. Still a solid step for automotive supply chains.

The 800 kg CO2 per vehicle savings is the real number to watch. At 550k units that is 440k tons annually. But that assumes the recycling loop stays closed and energy for remelting is low carbon. Need to see the full LCA.

The CBAM angle is interesting. If Xiaomi can document this with EPD registration and IVL verification, it gives them a real edge on carbon pricing in Europe. Other automakers using virgin aluminum will face a higher tax bill per car.
