A mangrove restoration project in Xiamen, Fujian province, has transformed degraded aquaculture mudflats into a thriving intertidal wetland. The Xiatanwei Mangrove Park now spans 85 hectares, with species richness up 2.4-fold and fish biomass nearly tripled compared to pre-restoration levels. The restored forest also serves as a storm barrier and sequesters two to five times more carbon than equivalent terrestrial forests. The site gained international recognition after its mangroves fully offset carbon emissions from the 2017 BRICS Xiamen Summit, making it the first certified zero-carbon BRICS meeting. Since 2023, over 3 million tourists have visited the park, which also hosts educational programs for more than 150,000 students. The project is cited by the UN as a global blueprint for coastal rehabilitation.

85 hectares is not huge but the carbon sequestration rate being 2 to 5 times terrestrial forest is notable. I wonder what the actual tonnage per hectare per year is. That matters for scaling this model elsewhere.

The storm barrier function is probably the most immediate value for coastal cities. Mangroves reduce wave energy and prevent erosion. That alone can justify the restoration cost even without carbon markets.
