XFuel is establishing a modular production facility in Catalonia to convert 16,000 tonnes of marine waste oils into 14,000 tonnes of low-carbon marine gas oil. The project uses proprietary Chemical Liquid Refining technology to create drop-in fuels for the shipping sector. Funded by Catalonia's Nuclear Transition Fund, the plant aims to support economic regeneration in areas affected by the closure of the Ascó and Vandellós nuclear power plants while reducing the carbon footprint of hard-to-abate maritime industries.

Drop-in is the key word here. If the shipping companies do not have to retrofit their engines, the adoption rate is much higher. The cost per tonne of fuel compared to standard MGO will be the deciding factor for the operators.
