Wärtsilä validates world's first large-scale 100 percent hydrogen engine in Spain, with implications for India's green hydrogen goals and grid stability

Wärtsilä has started validation of the world's first large-scale 100 percent hydrogen engine, the Wärtsilä 31H2, at a power plant in Bermeo, Spain. The engine is designed to run entirely on hydrogen and feed electricity into Spain's national grid. This moves hydrogen from a theoretical fuel into a real-world power generation asset, with the engine being the largest pure hydrogen engine ever tested at scale. For India, the milestone matters because the country is targeting 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and pushing the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Hydrogen-capable engines could provide the flexible, dispatchable power needed to balance high shares of solar and wind on the grid. Wärtsilä's India managing director said the technology supports grid reliability as renewable penetration grows. The company already runs engines on natural gas blended with up to 25 percent hydrogen, and this 100 percent hydrogen engine is the next step toward fully renewable power systems.
