Wärtsilä is partnering with a 16-member EU consortium to develop internal combustion engines capable of running on hydrogen and biomethane blends. The H4PERION project aims to achieve 100% hydrogen operation for long-distance vessels to eliminate carbon emissions in open-sea conditions. The project includes real-world sea trials on the Aurora Botnia ferry and the development of catalyst systems to reduce methane slip. By using digital twins and laboratory testing, the consortium seeks to establish new safety and efficiency standards for zero-carbon maritime transport by 2030.
