Wärtsilä is partnering with the EU-funded H4PERION consortium to develop internal combustion engines capable of running on hydrogen and biomethane blends. The project aims to achieve 100% hydrogen operation for long-distance vessels to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions in open-sea conditions. Testing will take place on the Aurora Botnia ferry and in laboratory settings through 2030. The initiative also focuses on creating catalyst systems to reduce methane slip and training crew members to handle sustainable fuels safely.
