Wärtsilä is partnering with the EU-funded H4PERION project to create zero-carbon propulsion for long-distance shipping. The initiative focuses on developing engines that can run on a blend of hydrogen and biomethane, with the ultimate goal of achieving 100% hydrogen operation in open seas. Running through 2030, the project includes sea trials on the Aurora Botnia ferry and laboratory testing. Wärtsilä is also working on catalyst technology to reduce methane slip, aiming to lower the total lifecycle carbon footprint of maritime vessels.
