Wärtsilä will supply its Wärtsilä 25 Ammonia auxiliary engine for two new 51,350 m3 LPG/ammonia carriers built at Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering in Shanghai. The vessels are owned by Navigator Amon Shipping, a joint venture between Navigator Gas and Amon Maritime. The engine, paired with a NOx reducer and gas valve unit, can cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 90% compared to diesel when running on sustainable ammonia. The order includes a controllable pitch propeller system for efficiency and reliability. Engine delivery starts June 2027. This is one of the first commercial deployments of a 4-stroke ammonia engine in the marine sector, following Wärtsilä's 2023 launch of the technology. Ammonia is gaining traction as a carbon-free fuel to help shipping meet IMO net-zero targets by 2050.
