Wärtsilä 25 Ammonia Engine to Power Two New Gas Carriers for Lower Emissions
cyprusshippingnews.comWärtsilä will supply its 25 Ammonia auxiliary engine and propulsion systems for two new 51,350 m3 LPG/ammonia carriers owned by Navigator Amon Shipping. The ships, built at Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering in Shanghai, aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 90 percent when running on sustainable ammonia. The engine is the first commercially available 4-stroke ammonia solution for marine use, introduced in 2023. Ammonia is gaining traction as a carbon-free marine fuel to help the shipping industry meet IMO's 2050 net-zero target. The Wärtsilä 25 Ammonia engine, combined with a NOx reducer and controllable pitch propeller, is designed to improve efficiency and meet evolving environmental standards. Equipment deliveries to the yard begin in June 2027.
