Wärtsilä will supply its 25 Ammonia auxiliary engine, NOx reducer, and controllable pitch propeller for two new 51,350 m3 LPG/ammonia carriers built at Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering in Shanghai. The vessels are owned by Navigator Amon Shipping AS, a joint venture between Navigator Gas and Amon Maritime. The ammonia engine can reduce total greenhouse gas emissions by at least 90% compared to diesel when running on sustainable ammonia, helping the ships meet IMO's 2050 net-zero target. Equipment delivery starts June 2027. The order includes the first commercially available 4-stroke ammonia engine from 2023. This shows ammonia is gaining traction as a carbon-free marine fuel, though actual emission reductions depend on sustainable ammonia supply and full lifecycle accounting.
