Worley awarded pre-FEED contract for Abeona CCS project in Dutch North Sea

Worley has been selected to carry out pre-front-end engineering design (pre-FEED) for the Abeona CCS project in the Dutch North Sea. The project will repurpose depleted Helm and Helder oil fields and an existing pipeline to store CO2 from industrial emitters near the North Sea Canal Area and Port of Amsterdam. Start-up is targeted for late 2030. The project aims to deliver 30 to 50 million tonnes of CO2 storage capacity. A recent assessment by Bureau Veritas confirmed that a 20-inch pipeline from the Q1 block to Amsterdam can be reused for CO2 transport. The Dutch government and EU support CCS as part of climate neutrality goals by 2050.

Worley doing pre-FEED for a Dutch CCS project that wants to reuse old oil fields and a pipeline. 30-50 Mt capacity sounds big but start up is 2030 so still a while out.

Yeah the pipeline reuse part is interesting. Bureau Veritas gave it the green light but I wonder what the actual retrofit cost looks like compared to building new.

30 million tonnes is a lot. But pre-FEED is early stage. Would like to see the injection rates and how long those depleted reservoirs can actually hold that volume without issues.

EU target is 50 Mt storage per year by 2030. This project alone could cover most of that if it scales. But the policy support needs to stay consistent through permitting.
