World Sailing measures Olympic equipment environmental impact for first time

The assessment covers a full four year Olympic cycle and will inform new equipment rules starting with the 2032 Games. World Sailing hopes the findings will push manufacturers toward reusable materials and circular design, and that the wider boating industry will follow. Early changes could affect supplier selection for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Athletes and environmental groups support the move, noting that elite sailors often buy multiple versions of gear to gain a competitive edge, creating unnecessary waste. The project aims to replace guesswork with data, potentially reducing both emissions and costs for teams.
