World Sailing has launched a first of its kind life cycle assessment of Olympic class sailing equipment to measure its environmental impact from production to disposal. The project, run with sustainability consultancy Marine Futures, collects data from boat builders and athletes on materials like carbon fiber and fiberglass that are energy intensive to produce and hard to recycle. The goal is to identify the biggest opportunities to cut emissions and waste across a four year Olympic cycle. The assessment will look at everything from manufacturing processes to how often sailors replace gear and how they travel with boats. Early findings could influence equipment choices for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and starting in 2032 all Olympic sailing classes will need to provide an independently verified life cycle assessment. World Sailing hopes the data will also push suppliers toward reusable materials and circular design, with potential ripple effects across the broader boating industry.
