World Sailing has launched its first life cycle assessment of Olympic class sailing equipment. The project, run with sustainability consultancy Marine Futures, will measure the carbon and waste footprint of boats, sails, masts, and other gear from production through disposal. The goal is to use the data to redesign equipment, reduce material waste, and cut emissions from manufacturing and transport. The findings are expected to influence equipment rules for the 2032 Olympics and could push suppliers toward recycled materials like PET plastic instead of PVC foam. The assessment covers the full four year Olympic cycle and will look at everything from how builders make carbon fiber and fiberglass hulls to how often athletes replace gear and how they travel to events. World Sailing hopes the work will set a standard for other sports and the broader boating industry. Athletes and class associations are already testing alternatives like recycled PET foam, though they caution that changes must keep boats affordable and durable. The project is a concrete example of using lifecycle data to drive real reductions in carbon and waste, not just branding.
