World's Tallest Hybrid Timber Tower Tops Out in Sydney, Cutting Carbon by 50%
propertymarkets.newsAtlassian Central, a 39-storey hybrid timber tower in Sydney, has reached its full height of over 180 metres, making it the world's tallest building of its kind. The structure combines mass timber with steel and concrete, targeting a 50% reduction in upfront embodied carbon compared to a conventional office tower and a 50% improvement in operational energy efficiency. The project, co-owned by Dexus and Atlassian, uses a hybrid structural system that reduces overall building weight and carbon impact while meeting safety standards. The design includes natural materials, light, and ventilation, aiming for a 5 Star NABERS rating. Construction was led by Built in a joint venture with Obayashi Corporation, using advanced digital engineering to sequence the complex build. With the structural frame complete, work continues on façade and building services, with practical completion expected by the end of this year. The tower sets a new global benchmark for sustainable commercial construction, demonstrating that large-scale buildings can significantly lower carbon emissions without compromising performance.
