World's tallest hybrid timber tower tops out in Sydney, cutting embodied carbon by 50%
architectureanddesign.com.auAtlassian Central, a 39-storey hybrid timber tower in Sydney, has reached its full height of over 180 metres, becoming the world's tallest building of its kind. The project combines mass timber with steel and concrete to cut upfront embodied carbon by 50% compared to a conventional office tower and improve operational energy efficiency by 50% over a standard 5 Star NABERS base building. Designed by SHoP and BVN, the building uses prefabrication and dry construction to reduce on-site waste and speed up delivery. The tower is co-owned by Dexus and Atlassian and is on track for completion by the end of the year. Its hybrid structural system reduces overall weight while maintaining the strength needed for a high-rise commercial building. The project sets a new benchmark for sustainable office design, integrating natural materials, daylight, and fresh air to support occupant wellbeing and lower carbon impact.
