World's largest tension-leg floating wind platform sets sail in China, advancing deep-sea offshore wind commercialization
globaltimes.cnChina has launched the world's first 16-megawatt tension-leg floating offshore wind platform from Zhuhai, Guangdong Province. The 307-meter tall, 8,000-ton structure is expected to generate 54 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, cutting carbon dioxide emissions by about 35,000 tons and reducing fuel oil consumption by 15,000 cubic meters each year. The platform will transmit power directly to an offshore oilfield grid via subsea cables, integrating renewable energy with oil and gas production. This model aims to lower emissions from offshore operations while boosting the floating wind supply chain in the Pearl River Delta. China now accounts for 78% of newly grid-connected offshore wind capacity worldwide in 2025, according to a separate industry report. The project represents a concrete step toward commercializing deep-sea wind technology and reducing fossil fuel dependence in coastal industrial zones.
