Australia's Incat has unveiled the China Zorrilla, a 130-meter fully electric catamaran built for Buquebus. It can carry 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles across the Rio de la Plata between Argentina and Uruguay. The ferry uses a 40 MWh battery pack to run eight electric waterjets, with no diesel engines onboard. Maritime electrification has mostly been limited to shorter routes in Norway, Denmark, and New Zealand. This vessel is the largest electric ferry yet by passenger and vehicle capacity. The project lands as the IMO pushes for net-zero shipping around 2050, though charging time, shore power, and the local grid mix will decide how much carbon it actually saves.
