Shipping got its first commercial ship-to-ship green ammonia refueling off Zhoushan, China. The bunkering vessel Shenghang Yongle transferred 1,000 tonnes of ammonia to the Belgian cargo ship Mineral Europa. The fuel came from a green hydrogen and ammonia project in Jilin, using renewable electricity. That matters because deep-sea shipping has few clean fuel options, and ammonia can burn without CO2. The ship-to-ship method lets vessels refuel at anchorage instead of docking, which could cut port time. But green ammonia is still scarce and costly, and its safety risks need management. The next test is whether production can scale and whether regulators count the full lifecycle emissions.
