World's first nuclear heat hydrogen plant opens in Kalpakkam, India uses Cu-Cl thermochemical cycle

The pilot plant at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research in Kalpakkam uses the Copper-Chlorine thermochemical cycle to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, replacing the need for electrolysis. The heat comes from the Fast Breeder Test Reactor, India's only operating fast reactor research facility. The project was developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and integrated by IGCAR. Officials say nuclear power's continuous carbon-free electricity and high-temperature heat make it suitable for large-scale hydrogen production. The pilot plant will generate operational data to help scale up nuclear-assisted hydrogen production in future advanced reactor systems, potentially strengthening India's energy security and decarbonization efforts.
