Finnish energy company Wärtsilä has successfully tested the world's first large-scale hydrogen engine at its facility in northern Spain. The engine runs entirely on hydrogen and generated electricity for Spain's national grid. The technology is designed to provide backup power when wind and solar generation are low, without producing carbon emissions. Unlike hydrogen fuel cells, this system uses a large combustion engine adapted to burn pure hydrogen. Wärtsilä says multiple units could be combined into utility-scale power plants producing hundreds of megawatts. However, large-scale hydrogen use requires significant investment in production, storage, and transport infrastructure, plus stronger policy support. The test comes as Spain expands its renewable energy share.
