The Heidelberg Materials plant in Brevik, Norway, has become the first cement facility to capture CO2 emissions during production. The system filters exhaust gases, liquefies the carbon, and transports it for permanent storage beneath the North Sea seabed via the Northern Lights infrastructure. While the project demonstrates a viable path for decarbonizing one of the most carbon-intensive industries, it also highlights significant challenges regarding high costs and scalability. The viability of such projects depends heavily on rising EU carbon prices and government subsidies.
