A new study estimates the 2026 FIFA World Cup will generate about 4.2 million metric tons of CO2, with over 80% coming from spectator travel, mostly by air. The average attendee will be responsible for roughly 1.8 metric tons of carbon dioxide, about a third of what a typical European emits in a full year. Stadiums, hotels, and food together account for less than a fifth of total emissions. The researchers used resale ticket prices to measure the value fans place on attending, then compared that to the social cost of carbon. At $185 per ton, the World Cup's climate damage comes to about $790 million, but the event still comes out ahead by a roughly three-to-one margin. The tournament would tip into net loss if carbon were priced near $550 per ton. The study argues that event organizers should share responsibility for fan travel emissions. Coldplay's 2024 European tour serves as a model, where the band cut its overall footprint by nearly half through an app that rewarded fans for choosing lower-carbon travel options. For the World Cup, holding more matches in Europe could sharply reduce long-haul flights since about 40% of international fans come from there.
