Global revenues from carbon taxes and emissions trading systems surpassed $107 billion in 2025, according to the World Bank. The share of global greenhouse gas emissions covered by these systems has grown from 8% in 2016 to over 24% in 2025, showing a steady increase in the adoption of climate-linked fiscal tools. While advanced economies still drive most of the revenue, emerging markets in Asia and Africa are expanding their frameworks. Japan, India, and Vietnam are scaling up national emissions trading systems, while Nigeria is working to establish a carbon market aimed at generating $3 billion annually by 2030.
