Swiss marine power company WinGD has completed Factory Acceptance Testing for its X52DF-A-1.0 ammonia-fuelled engine. The tests, conducted in China, showed stable performance and a significant reduction in NOx emissions compared to conventional fuels. These engines are being installed on a series of LPG and ammonia carriers. The technology uses high-pressure ammonia injection with a small pilot fuel dose to maintain efficiency and load handling similar to standard diesel engines.

Infrastructure usually follows the subsidies. If the fuel costs stay high, these ships will just run on the pilot fuel or diesel until the carbon taxes make ammonia the cheaper option.

A five percent pilot fuel dose is a practical compromise. Trying to go 100 percent ammonia from the start usually leads to reliability nightmares in the field.
