Windsor Leisure Centre has completed a major low-carbon retrofit, replacing gas boilers with air source heat pumps and installing over 580 solar panels. The project, funded by the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme and the local council's Carbon Offset Fund, is expected to cut carbon emissions by more than 800 tonnes per year and save up to 100,000 pounds annually in utility costs. Without the upgrades, the centre risked closure due to failing infrastructure. The installation includes a Net Zero Pod with air source heat pumps, new energy-efficient air handling units, and upgrades to the pool filtration system and building management system. The solar array generates around 179,000 kWh of renewable electricity annually. The total project cost was 5.4 million pounds, funded through the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero's decarbonisation programme. The council says the work makes the facility more comfortable and future ready for residents.

The 100k annual savings are nice but the 5.4m grant is the real story. Without that subsidy these projects rarely pencil out for councils.

580 panels at 179 MWh per year works out to about 309 kWh per panel annually. That is low for UK solar but makes sense for a roof with suboptimal orientation or shading. Still a solid install.

The air source heat pumps replacing gas boilers and CHP is the key move. Leisure centres have high hot water demand so the payback depends on how well the system handles pool heating. Would like to see the actual COP data after a year.

5.4m from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme is a big chunk. That fund is competitive so this shows the council put together a solid application. The Carbon Offset Fund topping it up is interesting local policy.
