Wind turbine blade epoxy upcycled into high-strength adhesives via mild catalytic oxidation
eurekalert.orgResearchers at Sichuan University have developed a mild catalytic oxidation method to convert epoxy resin from end-of-life wind turbine blades into high-strength adhesives. Using vanadyl acetylacetonate as a catalyst and molecular oxygen as the oxidant, the process breaks C-O bonds at 100 degrees Celsius within 6 hours, yielding hydroxy-rich degradation products that can be used directly as adhesives without further modification. The upcycled adhesives bond well to metals, glass, wood, and plastics, and hold up in acidic, alkaline, and organic solvent environments. The method also recovers the catalyst, solvents, and reinforcing fibers, with the fibers retaining tensile strength close to virgin material. This offers a scalable route for managing wind turbine blade waste and reducing the carbon footprint of composite materials.
