Researchers tested a lightweight, wheelless rover in Chile's Atacama Desert to simulate Mars exploration. The prototype uses a carbon fiber frame and wind power to move, aiming to replace heavy, fuel dependent rovers with low cost swarms of sensors. By removing traditional engines and wheels, the design significantly reduces launch mass and costs. The rover functions as a mobile weather station, collecting atmospheric and geophysical data while tumbling across the landscape.
