A new study in Nature Geoscience shows that dark brown carbon from wildfires absorbs more sunlight than previously thought. This organic aerosol can match or exceed the warming impact of black carbon, particularly in the visible spectrum. The research highlights a significant risk for the Arctic and high latitude regions. When this dark carbon deposits on snow and ice, it reduces surface albedo and accelerates melting, creating a dangerous feedback loop that amplifies global temperature increases.
