Why Net Zero Is Not Enough to Stop Extreme Wildfires
eurekalert.orgA study from POSTECH reveals that reaching carbon neutrality alone cannot reverse the extreme fire danger already baked into the climate system. While net zero stops the situation from worsening, it does not remove the atmospheric CO2 driving current wildfire intensity. To actually reduce the frequency and severity of these fires, the research argues for net negative strategies. This requires active carbon removal and capture technologies to lower existing atmospheric concentrations and stabilize global weather patterns.
