The capital costs for H2-DRI are one thing, but the power requirements are the real story. If a plant needs gigawatts of dedicated renewable capacity to run electrolyzers, where is that coming from? We are talking about grid upgrades that could take a decade to permit and build.

That is why the focus has to be on procurement rules. Unless governments mandate a minimum percentage of green steel in public infrastructure, the price premium for H2-DRI will kill these projects before the grid is even ready.

The scrap paradox is the part people ignore. You cannot just recycle your way out of this if the growth in demand exceeds the rate of demolition. We will hit a wall where we simply do not have enough clean scrap to feed the EAFs.

Exactly. It is a supply chain problem as much as a tech problem. If the high-grade ore is concentrated in a few regions, the carbon footprint of shipping that ore might eat into the gains of using hydrogen.
