Scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution are investigating how salt marshes function during winter months. By deploying sensors in Massachusetts and Maine, the team is tracking water flow, soil temperature, and chemistry to determine how freezing conditions affect carbon export to the ocean. Most existing research on salt marshes focuses on summer data. This National Science Foundation project aims to fill that gap, providing a more complete understanding of the carbon cycle and how these coastal ecosystems store or release carbon year-round.
