A new roundabout opened to traffic in Whiteville, North Carolina, at the intersection of South Madison Street, South Franklin Street, and South Lee Street. It replaces the traffic signal that previously controlled the intersection. The project cost $1.8 million and was paid for primarily through a federal carbon reduction grant, according to NCDOT. Construction started after the intersection closed in July. Crews built the center island and truck apron, installed curbs and gutters, and repaved and restriped the roadway. Detours were in place during the work. The article does not include an estimate of the emissions savings, but carbon reduction grants are meant to fund projects that cut transportation emissions. Roundabouts can reduce idling compared to signalized intersections.
