Researchers have detected naturally occurring hydrogen gas beneath the Canadian Shield in northern Ontario. This white hydrogen forms through geological reactions between water and iron-rich minerals, offering a potential alternative to energy-intensive green hydrogen production. If commercially viable, these natural reserves could provide a low-carbon fuel source for hard-to-abate sectors like heavy shipping, aviation, and steel manufacturing.
