Whistler Glacier could vanish in 10 years as three B.C. glaciers shrink, study says
montreal.citynews.caA new Simon Fraser University study finds three glaciers in southwest British Columbia are shrinking so quickly they could disappear within decades. Whistler Glacier has lost 95 percent of its area over the past 50 years and could be gone within 10 years. The Horstman and Blackcomb glaciers have lost up to 75 percent of their area and could melt out in 30 to 70 years. The study, published in Annals of Glaciology, says cutting carbon emissions now won't save these three glaciers. Their fate was largely set by past emissions. But the lead researcher says those same cuts could still protect larger glaciers in Canada and globally, and reduce sea level rise risk from major ice sheets. The findings also carry local economic weight, since Whistler Blackcomb suspended summer skiing on Horstman Glacier last year.
