Where Vietnam's 856 trillion VND green credit is going: agriculture, forestry, and energy lead
vietnam.vnVietnam's green credit balance passed 856 trillion VND by the end of June 2026, roughly 4.2% of total outstanding credit, according to the State Bank of Vietnam. That is up 9.87% from the end of 2025, with average annual growth above 20% since 2017. Agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and biodiversity conservation take the largest share at over 31%, while green energy accounts for nearly 28%. Bank loans screened for environmental and social risk reached over 6.2 trillion VND, about 31.33% of total lending. The government is positioning green credit alongside a planned carbon market to help close an estimated $368 billion climate investment gap by 2040. Clear green project criteria and solid measurement and verification of emission reductions will determine whether that capital actually delivers.
