When to Switch to an Electric Car for the Biggest Climate Win
evidencenetwork.caA study in Science looked at whether it is better to scrap a gasoline car early and buy an electric vehicle, or keep the old car running. The researchers found that replacing an internal combustion vehicle with an EV almost always cuts greenhouse gas emissions, even if the car is new. The biggest reduction, 58% over 16 years, comes from scrapping a petrol or diesel car in its first year and switching to electric. But there are exceptions. Plug-in hybrids are already efficient, so replacing them early can sometimes increase emissions. If you drive less than 7,000 km per year, it is not worth the swap. The local electricity grid also matters, though even on coal-heavy grids, the best-selling gasoline models still show a benefit. The study is based on U.S. data, but areas with cleaner grids, like Italy with about 50% renewable power, get an even bigger advantage.
