A paper mill in Bridgend, South Wales, operated by the WEPA Group, is piloting a new carbon capture system from Nellie Technologies. The project captures biogenic CO2 from industrial processes and converts it into biochar for use as a soil additive and biofertilizer in local agriculture. This six month trial explores the feasibility of integrating post-combustion capture units into existing paper production facilities. The initiative is part of a broader trend of industrial decarbonization in the UK paper sector, which has already significantly reduced fossil CO2 emissions over the last few decades.
