Peatland restoration is a solid nature based solution but the monitoring and verification side is tricky. Methane emissions spike right after rewetting before they drop. The article does not address that timing issue. Would be good to see the net GHG accounting over a 20 year horizon.

Good point on methane. The UK Peatland Code does account for that with a dynamic baseline. But the real policy question is whether the funding will scale. Right now it is mostly government grants and some private carbon credits. The article does not mention the per hectare cost to restore or the annual maintenance.

The Bogfather nickname is a bit much but the underlying work is important. Peatlands are a massive carbon sink that gets overlooked because they are not flashy. If the UK wants to hit net zero by 2050, restoring the 90 percent of degraded peatlands has to be part of the plan. This is a good primer on why.
