Nitrogen dioxide and black carbon levels on Wellington's Golden Mile rose 15% in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to a Greater Wellington Regional Council report. The increase is tied to Metlink adding more diesel buses to meet rising passenger numbers after earlier gains from electric bus deployment. Despite the recent uptick, overall pollution on Manners Street has dropped 35% for nitrogen dioxide since 2016 and 43% for black carbon since mid-2020. The council plans new bus spines along the harbour quays, which it expects will further improve air quality due to better exposure and dispersion. The committee chair Quentin Duthie said the findings strengthen the case for more government support to expand Wellington's electric bus fleet. Separately, the report flagged that Wairarapa towns have the region's worst winter air quality, driven by wood burners and poor dispersion, with Masterton logging over 50 high-pollution days per year.
