Weichai WP15 Hydrogen Engine Achieves China VI Certification for Heavy-Duty Trucks
fuelcellsworks.comWeichai Power has announced that its WP15 hydrogen direct-injection engine for heavy-duty vehicles passed the full China VI emission certification tests in July 2026. This makes it the first heavy-duty hydrogen internal combustion engine in China and the world to meet the standard. The engine produces 600 horsepower and 2,800 Nm of torque with a brake thermal efficiency of 46.8 percent. It shares over 90 percent of its components with conventional diesel engines, which could lower production and maintenance costs for fleet operators. The WP15 is designed for long-haul trucks, mining equipment, port vehicles, and stationary power generators. Weichai says the engine tolerates lower hydrogen purity, which may reduce fuel costs. The company plans to accelerate mass production and support national hydrogen demonstration projects. This certification is a step toward zero-carbon heavy transport, but the real test will be whether the engine can compete on total cost of ownership with diesel and battery electric alternatives in real fleet operations.
