Weichai Power Launches World's First China VI-Compliant Heavy-Duty Hydrogen Engine for Zero-Carbon Trucks
hydrogen-central.comWeichai Power has introduced the WP15, a heavy-duty hydrogen direct-injection engine that passed China's strict VI emission certification. The engine produces 600 horsepower and 2,800 Nm of torque with a thermal efficiency of 46.8%, making it a strong candidate for long-haul trucks, mining equipment, and port vehicles. With over 90% parts commonality with conventional diesel engines, it aims to lower production and maintenance costs while cutting carbon emissions. This certification marks a milestone for hydrogen internal combustion engines in heavy transport, where battery-electric options face range and weight limitations. Weichai plans to push the WP15 into mass production and support national hydrogen demonstration projects. The engine's tolerance for lower-purity hydrogen could also reduce fuel costs, accelerating the shift away from diesel in hard-to-abate sectors.
