Weichai Power launches world's first China VI compliant heavy duty hydrogen engine for zero carbon trucks
macaubusiness.comWeichai Power has announced that its WP15 hydrogen direct injection engine for heavy duty trucks passed China VI emission certification tests in July 2026. The engine is a 14.6 liter hydrogen internal combustion engine that produces 600 horsepower and 2800 Nm of torque. It achieves a brake thermal efficiency of 46.8 percent and shares over 90 percent of its components with conventional diesel engines, which could lower production and maintenance costs for fleet operators. The certification was done at the CATARC test center in Tianjin and covered cold starts, idling, full load, and transient conditions. Weichai says the engine is suited for long haul trucks, mining equipment, port vehicles, and stationary power generators. The company plans to move toward mass production and support national hydrogen demonstration projects. The key question is whether hydrogen combustion engines can compete with fuel cells or battery electric trucks on total cost of ownership once fuel supply and infrastructure are factored in.
