Weichai Power has announced that its WP15 hydrogen direct injection engine for heavy duty trucks passed China VI emission certification tests in July 2026. The engine is a 14.6 liter hydrogen internal combustion engine that produces 600 horsepower and 2800 Nm of torque. It achieves a brake thermal efficiency of 46.8 percent and shares over 90 percent of its components with conventional diesel engines, which could lower production and maintenance costs for fleet operators. The certification was done at the CATARC test center in Tianjin and covered cold starts, idling, full load, and transient conditions. Weichai says the engine is suited for long haul trucks, mining equipment, port vehicles, and stationary power generators. The company plans to move toward mass production and support national hydrogen demonstration projects. The key question is whether hydrogen combustion engines can compete with fuel cells or battery electric trucks on total cost of ownership once fuel supply and infrastructure are factored in.

Interesting to see a hydrogen combustion engine pass China VI. The 90% parts commonality with diesel engines is a big deal for maintenance and retrofitting. But I wonder how the well to wheel efficiency compares to a fuel cell or a battery truck.

The 46.8% brake thermal efficiency is decent for an ICE but still lower than a fuel cell system. The real bottleneck is hydrogen supply and cost per kg. If they can run on lower purity hydrogen that helps, but the fuel still needs to be produced and delivered.

China VI certification is a regulatory milestone but it doesn't mean the fuel is zero carbon. Hydrogen from steam methane reforming still has a carbon footprint unless paired with CCS. The article doesn't say where the hydrogen comes from. That matters for actual decarbonization.

Good point. The 90% parts commonality is smart for keeping costs down in the transition. But if the hydrogen is grey, you're just moving the emissions upstream. The engine itself is clean at the tailpipe but the full lifecycle depends on the hydrogen source.
