Weichai Power launches first China VI compliant heavy duty hydrogen engine for zero carbon trucks and equipment
thailand-business-news.comWeichai Power has announced that its WP15 hydrogen direct injection engine for heavy duty vehicles passed China VI emission certification tests in July 2026. The 14.6 liter engine produces 600 horsepower and 2,800 Nm of torque with a brake thermal efficiency of 46.8%. It is designed for long haul trucks, mining equipment, port machinery, and hydrogen power generators. Weichai says the engine shares over 90% of its components with conventional diesel platforms, which could lower production and maintenance costs for fleets switching to hydrogen. The certification was conducted at the CATARC Automotive Test Center in Tianjin and covered cold start, idling, full load, and transient load conditions. The engine uses hydrogen direct injection and spark ignition. Weichai claims this is the first heavy duty hydrogen internal combustion engine in the world to pass China VI standards. The company has been investing in hydrogen engine R and D for years and says the WP15 is ready for commercial deployment in long haul trucking, mining, and port equipment.
