Hydrogen combustion engines work differently from fuel cells. They burn hydrogen directly in a modified internal combustion engine rather than using a fuel cell to convert hydrogen to electricity. This approach lets manufacturers keep existing production lines and supply chains for engine parts, which could speed up adoption. The trade off is that hydrogen combustion still produces some nitrogen oxides, so it is not truly zero emission at the tailpipe, though it eliminates CO2. Weichai claims the engine meets China VI limits for NOx and other pollutants. Heavy duty trucking is a major source of CO2 and local air pollution, so any credible hydrogen option for that segment matters.
